I’m sharing a second drabble from Mythical Creatures of Asia today, this is by one of my favorite Black Hare Press drabblers, McKenzie Richardson.

The Nail in the Nape of Her Neck

They say Harum was the perfect wife, Bejo’s prized possession.

The child hadn’t known any better when the pretty woman approached him. She’d said her neck hurt. He’d only wanted to help.

That evening, Bejo came home to the scent of plumeria flowers, which gave way to that of rotting flesh as his wife greeted him. Free of the nail that bound her, true form reinstated, she sought revenge against the man who’d trapped her.

With long fingernails she sliced him apart, grinned as glistening organs spilled out.

The pontianak feasted alone that night before disappearing among the banana trees.

McKenzie Richardson lives in Milwaukee, WI. A lifelong explorer of imagined worlds on the written page, over the last few years she has been finding homes for her own creations. Most recently, her stories and poetry have been published in anthologies from Eerie River Publishing, Black Hare Press, Iron Faerie Publishing, and Dragon Soul Press. In addition, she has published a poetry collaboration with Casey Renee Kiser, 433 Lighted Way, and her middle-grade fantasy novel, Heartstrings, is available on Amazon.
