Today we have Joachim Heijndermans making his Insignia Stories debut! I’m a big fan of Joachim’s drabbles and stories over at Black Hare Press, and thrilled to be able to include his work in our newest anthology, Mythical Creatures of Asia.
Enjoy this dark drabble featuring Korean beasts!
And Yet…
Joachim Heijndermans
They kept us safe from the great fires that razed the fields. Houses, palaces and barns of food were saved by the great haechi.
And yet…
With thunderous roars and heavy steps, they ran across the plains and saved Hanyang from the great fire that would have killed tens upon tens of thousands.
And yet…
We owe them our lives and that of future generations of Korea. The great beasts are our protectors, eating the hot flames even as it scorches their beautiful hides.
And yet, why did they have to eat my boy? Why him? My sweet little boy.
Joachim Heijndermans writes, draws, and paints nearly every waking hour. Originally from the Netherlands, he’s been all over the world, boring people by spouting random trivia. His work has been featured in a number of anthologies and publications, such as Mad Scientist Journal, Asymmetry Fiction, Hinnom Magazine, Ahoy Comics, Metaphorosis, The Gallery of Curiosities and several anthologies from BlackHare Press, and he’s currently in the midst of completing his first children’s book.
