“Go to sleep, or the Gurumapa will come for you,” Keshab said.

Mukta gawked at his older brother. “Don’t speak his name. Just saying it will make him come.”

“Only if a parent beckons,” Keshab said.

Mukta watched as Keshab’s eyes widened. He was staring out the bedroom window, and Mukta turned to look. The trees parted and a giant creature emerged from the forest.

“He’s coming!” Mukta said.

Mukta sat frozen on his bed, the creature stopping outside the window.

“Please don’t take me,” Mukta pleaded.

“I haven’t come for you,” the Gurumapa said. “I’ve come for your brother.”

Kevin Hopson has dabbled in many genres over the years, but crime fiction and fantasy are his true loves. His novelette, Pursuing the Dead, was a 2019 Author Shout Reader Ready Awards winner.
